Oh, the love of February. Not actually my favorite month, but to make the best of it, I believe it needs a little “love potion”. So for me I must start bringing spring into the house. Not too much color yet..I save that for March but I do love a few plants in baskets or glass terrariums to help me think spring.

If this is something you are interested in then here are a few ideas where to start:

glass container

Find a glass container if you prefer. This could also be a tall or short wide mouth vase for a terrarium style. I filled the bottom with rock as this gives the water a place to drain without clogging the plant roots and adds another texture as well.

A glass bowl would also work or in this case a glass bowl within a basket:

I then lined the bowl with sheet moss. This step can be skipped but does allow a place again for extra water as well as adding another layer to the design.

plant materials

Have ready a few plants you have on hand or purchase a few that appeal to you. In this case I found a few leftovers from Christmas baskets to use.

The plants have been added to the glass container. This would also work in a more modern setting by using at least 3 smaller glass containers and adding small plant materials to each of those.

Now the plants have been added to the basket. I have used some small ferns and a small pop of a white flower as well as some ivy. They are each in a little plastic container that they came in, but they could also be removed. I like to leave them because it’s easier to move plants around if I so choose. By adding some sticks to the middle of the container, we’re adding another texture as well as more height. They may not stand perfect at this point but by time the basket is filled they will be fine.

Ok, now look around for a few extras if you are using a larger container as mine above. I found a bird as well as some extra moss, moss balls and an ornament that will give the sense of a gazing ball.

The moss balls make great filler for those places that are bare and need filling in. (They are also great in a vase all by themselves.) The little bird ended up nestled on one with a bit more sphagnum moss that came with the plants giving the feeling of a nest.

Another little design trick I use for creating these is adding a few pieces of faux plant material to fill any spots that need something more.

Back of Basket

Here is the back of the basket, where¬† some faux grass was added as a filler. Balls of moss or just layers of moss would work too….or maybe you have some other interesting items to add. A garden gnome, angel or other garden ornament could easily replace the bird.

This basket can be enjoyed for a long time. Later it can be rearranged a bit and some colorful floral could be added or maybe you are ready for those colorful ones right now.

Have fun and enjoy.
